Re: Golden State (clipper ship)
Golden State-clipper.
The “Golden State”,built in 1852 by Jacob A.Westervelt for Chambers and Heiser of New York, was launched in New York on January 10,1853.According to O.T.Howe and F.C.Matthews:”she had very fine lines, her ends being long and sharp and was a beautiful vessel, alow and a aloft. She was a favorite vessel with shippers and also a profitable one to her owners”.Recorded as having the longest record of any ship in the China trade, the “Golden State”was an “extreme clipper ship”,designed to carry cargo at high speeds. In 1860, the two “extreme clipper ships”, “Golden State” and “Golden Fleece” left New York on the same day. Despite taking different routes in the Atlantic section of their voyages, the two ships arrived in San Francisco a few hours apart, on Oct. 29th, after passages of 128 days. She made a number of exceptionally fast voyages from New York around Cape Horn, stopping in San Francisco on the way to Shanghai and Hon Kong,a few times continuing to England,Ireland, and once Germany, returning to the New York in ballast. After 1883,when she was renamed the “Anne C.Maguire” by her new Canadian owners, she served in the Atlantic trade under the Argentine flag. She went ashore and was wrecked on Cape Elizabeth,Maine,in December 1886.
Thank you Mr. D.v.Nieuwenhuijzen for information.
