NASSAU

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jun 21, 2015 8:21 pm

The wooden (given by Lloyds) as a snow NASSAU was built in Gosport, U.K in 1803 or 1805 I found both years in Lloyds Registry.
Launched as the NASSAU.
Tonnage 208 tons.
When she was lost she was owned by Pirie & Co., London.
Under command of Captain Edward Carrs she sailed from Sydney, Australia to London, during the voyage she sprang a leak on 09 June 1825 in 36 degree south and 2 degree east, and in consequence of this made for Tristan da Cunha. The crew toiled for six days and nights at the pumps before they reached the island. Because of the offshore wind they were unable to get around the island to the anchorage off the settlement and therefore ran the brig on shore on the east side of the island where she struck close to the beach on 30 August. She held for two days then broke up. After resting for four days the second mate and two of the crew crossed over the mountain to the settlement.
03 December the crew except two who decided to stay on the island, left on board the barque FAIRLIE bound for Hobart.
