Battle of MERS-EL-KEBIR 1940

MERS-EL-KEBIR 1940. Ships depicted on this stamp are HMS HOOD, BRETAGNE class (either BRETAGNE or PROVENCE both were at this battle). On 3 July 1940 BRETAGNE blew up and capsized during the action with the loss of 977 of her crew, PROVENCE badly damaged was beached.

She was taken to Toulon in Nov. 1940 and scuttled there on 27 Nov. 1942 (details of the ships will be found under their respective names) - Marshall Islands 1990 (???) 25c SG???? (P G Longhurst)
