The Greek Island in the Aegean Sea which was the scene of a great naval battle fought between the fleets of Greece and Persia in 400 BC The Athenian leader Themistocles had his fleet in the bay of Eleusis where they were trapped by the Persians who closed the two channels into the bay. It was the very narrowness of these channels that prevented the Persians from taking advantage of their superior numbers and led to their defeat. Their ships were thrown into complete disarray as the proceeded into the narrow channel and a well timed attack by Cimon, Themistocles' second-in-command, threw them back in disorder. After several hours of fighting some 200 Persian ships had been burnt or sunk against the Greek losses of around 40. This battle prevented the Persians going any further with their attempt to conquer Greece and indeed, led to them withdrawing on land as well during the next year.
