BURVESTNIK hydrofoil

For the 750th Anniversary of the town Nizhny Novgorod, the Russian Post issued in 1971 one stamp, which depict in the foreground an inland waterway hydrofoil.

She was the first gas turbine hydrofoil to be designed and known as the BUREVESTNIK (Petrel) of which only 1 is built. She was the flagship of the Volga River.
Built by Krasnoyz Sormovo Factory no 112 at Nizhny Novgorod for the Russian Government.
April 1964 launched as the BUREVESTNIK.
Displacement 44.5 ton empty, 70.8 ton full load, dim. 43.2 x 7.4 x 6.5m (height) draught 2.0m., on floats 0.4m.
Powered by two IL18 airplanes gas turbines, mounted on the sides, each 2,700 hp. driving 2 two-stage water-jets.
Speed 90-94 km/h
Range 500 km.
Crew 4, and seating for 150 passengers.
1967 After extensive trials and modification she was completed, with home port Nizhny Novgorod.

26 April 1968 in operation on the Volga River from Nizhny Novgorod-Kazan-Ulyanovsk to Kuibyshev, a distance of about 700 km
In service into the 1970s.
1993 Dismantled.
