TVER galley

The coat of arms of Kostroma Region was adopted in 2006. The main figure depicted on this coat of arms is a golden ship, which is a symbol of movement and achievement of the goal, shows Kostroma region allegorically, because it has a convenient transportation and geographic location. Priority directions of the development are forestry, agriculture, electric power industry, mechanical engineering, textile industry.
The historical coat of arms of Kostroma city was approved in 1767. It depicted a ship sailing on the waves of Volga River. The modern version of the official symbol of the city was adopted in 2002.
The stamp depicts the emblem of Kostroma city; the emblem of Kostroma Region and a map of the Russian Federation with the region highlighted in color are depicted on the margins of the souvenir sheet.

The vessel depict on the coat of arms of Kostroma is the vessel on which Empress Catherine travelled on the Volga River with a retinue of about 2000 persons, a flotilla of flat-bottomed galleys were build, a number of galleys with fewer than 15 banks. These were intended primarily as transport for the Russian royalty and had little combat value. And when Empress Catherine the Great did make her inspection trip on the Volga River she used this fleet of shallow rowing vessels for the voyage from 02 May till 05 June 1767 from Tver down streams. After the voyage the vessels were handed over to the Kazan Admiralty.
The galley Catherine II used was built at the Tver yard north of Moscow and was laid down in 1767.
03 April 1767 launched as the TVER.
She was a 12 bank galley, dim. 39 x 7.65m. The height of the hull at the stern was 7 metre.
Carried 3 saluting guns.
The hull was decorated with gold-plated elements with figures of Poseidon, nymphs, tritons etc. Her broad stern was decorated with the Imperial coat of arms and a special Catherine monogram.
After the inspection voyage Catherine II ordered that the TVER was kept in the same state.
She was destroyed later by fire, one source gives in 1956.
An open model of the TVER is today situated on the Petersburgkaya at Kazan on top of a five meter high tower.
