HILDEBRAND HMS 1911

Built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard no 431 by Scott’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Greenock for the Booth Steamship Co. Ltd., Liverpool.
04 February 1911 launched as the HILDEBRAND.
Tonnage 6,991 gross, 4,245 net, dim. 138.99 x 16.49 x 8.29m, length bpp. 134.2m.
Powered by two 4-cyl. quadrical expansion steam engine manufactured by shipbuilder, 946 nhp., twin shafts, speed 14 knots.
Accommodation for 218 first class and 406 3rd class passengers.
April 1911 completed.
16 April 1911 maiden voyage from Liverpool via Le Havre to Manaus on the Amazon River, she was used in service between the UK and Brazil till requisitioned by the British Admiralty.
20 November 1914 commissioned as an Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) HMS HILDEBRAND in the Royal Navy and she joined the 10th Cruiser Squadron. Armed with 8 – 4.7 inch guns, which later was altered to 8 – 6 inch and 2 – 6pdr. guns.
18 December 1914 refit completed and left for sea.
April 1917 her armament is given as 6 – 6 inch and 2 – 6 pdr. guns.
2 October 1917 while on convoy duty and escorting a convoy to the Clyde, she came under attack of a U-boat the torpedo missed but hit HMS DRAKE which sank.
17 January 1919 paid off at the Clyde, returned to owners and reconditioned for the liner service between the U.K. and Brazil. Renamed HILDEBRAND.
October 1919 she rescued the crew of the American schooner ERNST T LEE off Para, Brazil.
19 July 1932 sailed from the Mersey to Milford Haven where she was laid up in case the shipping market improved, but this was not the case and she was sold in February 1934 to J Cashmore, Newport, Monmouthshire.
20 April 1934 arrived Newport for scrapping.
