PATUCA HMS 1913

Built as a passenger-cargo-reefer vessel under yard No 320 by Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd, Belfast for the Elders & Fyffes Ltd., Belfast.
26 April 1913 launched as the PATUCA, named after a municipally in Honduras
Tonnage 6,103 gross, 5,800 dwt. Dim. 127.16 (bpp) x 16.24 x 9.17m.
Powered by two 3-cyl triple expansion steam engines, manufactured by shipbuilder, 6,000 ihp, twin shafts, speed 16 knots.
Four refrigerated holds for the carriage of fruit.
Accommodation for around 60 first class passengers.
October 1913 completed.

Used in the service between the U.K and the West Indies, mostly loaded on the return voyage with bananas.
21 November 1914 hired by the British Government as an Armed Merchant Cruiser, armed with 6 – 6 inch and 2 – 3pdr guns.
16 December 1914 commissioned as HMS PATUCA and served with the 10th Cruiser Squadron.
1915 Used as a kite balloon ship.
17 July 1919 handed back to owners, where after she was used again in the U.K. to West Indies service.
Sold to shipbreakers in Holland and arrived 18 May 1935 by F Rijsdijk & Co., Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, near Rotterdam for breaking up.
