The WESTERBEEK was built on the VOC yard in Amsterdam of the Chamber of the VOC of Amsterdam in 1722. She was named after a village in the south of the Netherlands.
Tonnage 325 last (650 ton) with a length of 130 ft.
She was a hekboot (hagboat) a cargo vessel of the 17th and 18th century most in use in the Netherlands. It was a mix between a flute and pinnace, the lower part built as a flute with large cargo capacity, the upper part built as a pinnace with large accommodation.
09 January 1723 she sailed from Texel bound for Batavia under command of Skipper Jan Kluit, arrived Batavia 15 July 1723.
Till 1726 she was used in the VOC service between Batavia and Bengal, Samarang and Banda.
21 October 1726 she sailed from Batavia bound for Texel under command of skipper Cornelis Haringkarsp via the Cape of Good Hope. Arrived Texel road 25 June 1727.
02 November 1727 she sailed again from Texel Road to Batavia under skipper Herman de Vrij, arrived Batavia 10 August 1728.
01 November 1728 she returned under the same skipper from Batavia to Texel where she arrived on 26 June 1729.
Then till 1734 used in the VOC trade from Batavia to Mocha, Persia, Bengal, Java and Bandjarmas
06 December 1734 sailed from Batavia to Goeree Road (at that time the entrance to Rotterdam) where she arrived on 03 August 1735.
25 April 1736 sailed from Goeree under command of skipper Pieter van Sprenkel bound for Batavia, where she arrived on 09 January 1737.
03 April 1737 sailed from Batavia under command of skipper Sprenkel bound for Texel road. Where she arrived on 26 September 1737.
20 April 1738 sailed from Texel bound for Batavia under command of skipper Pieter Kouderk arrived Batavia 29 October 1738.
25 December 1738 sailed from Batavia bound for Texel Road under command of Skipper Cornelis Damme, arrived Texel on 14 July 1739.
03 June 1740 sailed from Texel to Batavia under command of Skipper Dirk Pomp, who died during the voyage and command was taken over by Christian Boelhouwer. Arrived Batavia on 28 May 1741.
07 September 1741 sailed from Batavia to Ceylon, together with the WELTEVREDEN.
27 January 1742 sailed from Ceylon under command of Skipper Herman Schutte bound for the Netherlands, she was lost on 02 September 1742 on the Faroe Islands, 79 crew were saved and 11 lost. The ship and cargo were lost.
Most voyages between the Netherlands and Dutch East India were made in company with other ships of the VOC. The last voyage of the WESTERBEEK was made alone, maybe that is the reason that she was sailing around Scotland to the Netherlands or the “War of the Austrian Succession 1740-1748” that the WESTERBEEK made this much longer passage. She had a cargo on board for the Chamber of Zeeland in the south of the Netherlands.
