Canoe Prow of Gogodala

The annual Gogodala canoe festival take place in Balimo, Western province. The festival will showcase Gogodala war canoes, the30- 40m craft renowned for their decorations and artworks depicting animal figures and different objects representing various clans. The Gogodala make 30 meter) dugout racing canoes with elaborate prows and painted sides. Paddles are decorated with the owner’s clan. Canoe races symbolized the competitive rivalry but also the complementarities of clans and communities at the conclusion of the aida ceremony and at truce making.
