Tunisia: From the early 19th century, SANDALs were built mainly on the island of Djerba off the southwest coast, and at least until the 1940s, ferried passengers to the mainland. Double-ended, flat floors amidships. Decked at bow and stem; open waist. Outboard rudder; tiller. Generally painted black with a white stripe and simulated gunports. Single-masted, lateen-rigged boats set a large jib to a small bowsprit. Two-masted vessels stepped the small foremast in the bow, main mast about amidships; masts raked forward. Some set a square sail to both masts, others lateen sails, and still others a lateen mainsail and sprit foresail. Crew of 4 generally. One-masted type: length 12m, beam 2.85m, depth 1.3m; 15-50t burden.
