FAMOUS DUTCH ADMIRALS

Watercraft Philately gives in the September-October issue 1976 page 17 the following information on this set of stamps.
In 1943-44, the Netherlands issued a series of most interesting stamps depicting famous Dutch Admirals. In the background on each stamp, there is shown an early type of sailing vessel which, conceivably, could be associated with the Admiral portrayed. The question has been answered by the Historical Section of the Netherlands Ministerie van Defensie of the Marine in a letter to Norman Rubin dated 7 May 1976. The letter states, in part.”…. according to the Netherlands Postmuseum, it is not possible to identify the ships drawn in the background on the stamps with pictures of famous Dutch Admirals. However, the following ships, among many others, can be connected with the flag officer in question.

• The 7 1/2 C. denomination features Lieutenant-Admiral-General Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607-1676), one of the most revered mariners and naval officers in Dutch history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michiel_de_Ruyter

BREDERODE, viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9043 his flagship when he was killed in the battle in the Sound in November 1658 or de VRIJHEID, one of his flagships in the first Anglo-Dutch War.

• The 22 1/2 C. denomination features Cornelis Evertsen the Elder, (1610-1666) a Dutch naval officer and privateer of the 17th Century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelis_ ... _the_Elder

• HOLLANDIA (74 guns, built in 1883) in the Battle of Beachy Head, or SWAENENBURG, his ship when he conquered NEW YORK in 1673. The stamp shows a Bonaventure mizzen, not part of either vessel)

In a footnote, Rubin adds: I guess this is as far as we can go to identifying the vessels, short of intuitive jumps. The only guess I would feel comfortable with is de Ruyter’s ZEVEN PROVINCIEN. Be nice if we could see BREDERODE for Tromp & de With: could be from the stamps, although the high fo’c’sle in the Tromp stamp would lead me to the earlier AEMILIA.
