ARTEMIS tall ship 1926

Built as a steel hulled whale-catcher under yard No 281 by Nylands Verlsted, Oslo for Hvalfangerselskap Polaris A/S, Larvik, Norway. Managed by Melson & Melson.
Launched as POL II.
Tonnage 240 gross, 79 net, dim. 115.5 x 23.2 x 13.2ft.
Powered by a triple expansion 3-cyl steam engine, 135 nhp, speed11 knots. The engine was manufactured by ships-builder.
29 July 1926 completed, homeport Larvik.

After completing she sailed south as one of 5 whale catchers of a Norway whaling fleet with the factory ship N.T. NIESEN ALONSO, with the operating base in Hobart, Tasmania.
This whaling fleet was operating outside the territorial limits but within the open waters of the Ross Sea.
In the season 1931/32 and 1934/35 laid up
She stayed south until the outbreak of World War II. And joined in 1940 the Norway Free Merchant Fleet.

April 1941 hired as a minesweeper by the Royal Navy.
30 July 1941 taken over by Royal Norwegian Navy in Cape Town, South Africa and renamed JELØY
12 June 1942 returned to the Royal Navy, renamed in HMT LEVANTER and the Norwegian crew changed for a Royal Navy crew.
Thereafter she was a unit of the 177 M/S Group, Eastern Fleet in Cochin, India.

August 1946 she returned to owners in Norway and arrived 19 June at the Framnaes mek. Vaerksted, Sandefjord for dry-docking and survey. Sailed again on 21 June.
After arrival in Norway, she was renamed again in POL II.

1948 Sold to A/B Rivø (Gustav Bartley), Gothenburg, Sweden and resold to Sölvesborgs Skeppsmäkleri & Speditionskontor (Adolf Hedberg et. al. where after she was converted in a cargo vessel in Frederikshavn, Denmark.
Her steam machine and boiler removed and fitted out with a new 250 bhp. 2CY/SA 4-cyl diesel engine.

1951 Was she lengthened to 146ft, new tonnage 341 brt.

1963 Sold to Rederi A/B Lister (Adolf Hedberg). Djupekås, Sweden and renamed in LISTER.

1966 Sold to I/S Artemis (H.Hermansen), Marstal, Denmark and renamed ARTEMIS.
1971 A new diesel engine installed a 4CY/SA, 4-cyl. 300shp.
1987 Management of the ship was taken over by H.C. Grube I/S, Marstal.

2000 Sold to Frisian Sailing, Easterlittens, Netherlands. She was not renamed, Artemis is named after the Greek hunting goddess. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis
Converted to a 3-masted barque rigged sailing vessel, with cabins for 32 passengers.
Sail area 1050 square meter.
Tonnage 321 grt, 457 dwt. Dim. 59.2 x 7.05 x 3.80m. (draught)
For day trips she has accommodation for 120 guests.

2001 New engine installed a Caterpillar diesel engine type 3408 4CY/SA 8-cyl., 500 shp.

2006 Sold to Tallship Artemis BV, Easterlittens, Netherlands, not renamed, managed by Rood Boven Groen, Harlingen.

Mostly used in European coastal cruise voyages.

2019 Same name owners and manager, Homeport Harlingen, Netherlands, IMO No 5209699.
