Jean de Vienna (Dole, 1321 or 1341- Nicopolis (Bulgaria), 1396) was a French general and admiral during the Hundred Years War.
He began his military career at the age of 9 and was knighted at 21. At 24, he was appointed Captain-General of Franche-Comté. He was then governor of Calais when the city was taken by the king of England Edward III and was taken, prisoner. In 1373 Charles V appointed him Admiral of France. He reorganized the navy, set up a major construction program, created the coastguards, organized surveillance on the coasts and issued licenses to build and sell boats. He was killed in the Battle of Nicopolis in Bulgaria in 1341.
June 30, 1377: Admiral Jean de Vienne leaves Harfleur with the French royal fleet, burns the Isle of Wight, the county of Kent and Sussex.
Several ships of the French Navy were named in his honor.
On the left of the stamp are two most probably French warships from the 14th century.
