Europa 1998 consists of two stamps (15 and 30 cents) and is inspired by "National Festivals and National Days". Cyprus Postal Services chose the Cataclysmos Fair at Larnaca https://www.cyprusalive.com/en/the-fest ... -cataclysm as a holiday and the Declaration of the Independence of Cyprus as a National Day.
"Cataclysmos" Festival is a remnant and continuation of very ancient celebrations on the island of Cyprus. The origins of the festival date back to Greek antiquity and traces of its beginnings can be found in celebrations in honour of Goddess Aphrodite. As in most other cases, the Greek Cypriot people, observing tradition and passing from pagan festivities to Christian celebrations, dedicated this festival to the Holy Spirit, the Pentecost and the blessing of the waters.
Larnaca has through the centuries made "Cataclysmos" its own principal festival, celebrating the day with the utmost splendour. Many and varied changes have been brought about through the ages, but it can said that time has not affected the essence of "Cataclysmos". Larnace Municipality, the principal organiser of the Festival, puts up a rich six-day programme, including sailing and swimming events, concerts, traditional dancing, satirical contests, theatrical performances, etc.
