725th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY OF SPANDAU

For the 725th Anniversary of the city of Spandau, the Berliner Post issued one stamp of 0.20 pf. in 1957. The stamp is designed after an engraving by Kuhlmey from 1850. The engraving shows us two Spree-Havel –Kahn’s in front of Alt-Spandau.
The two barges visible on the stamp, mostly named in Berlin as “zillen” were wooden-hulled vessels, and through the covered hull most probably used in the passenger transport.
Fully built inland waterway barges in use from the early 16th century. The zille, which were built from wood with a flat ship's bottom, mostly had no sails of their own but were generally men powered forwards by 5 m long poles.

Dim. 5 – 50m, widths 1-6m; very shallow depth.
