„Challenge” (1851-1877)- clipper ship

The Clipper Ship Challenge was built in New York by William H. Webb and launched in May 1851. These ships were often called the Gold Rush Clippers as they were built to bring back gold from San Francisco. The Challenge was an extreme clipper measuring 227 feet in length, 42 feet in beam and 2006 tons. Challenge was captained by Robert Waterman and was expected to beat the extreme clipper Flying Cloud. Brutal treatment of inexperienced crew by Waterman and first mate James Douglass caused riots when San Franciscans heard of the first passage. She set a number of speed records during the course of its working life. She was ultimately wrecked off Ushant in 1877.
