In 1853 four ships with clipper lines were launched, of which the ship “California” is the most famous.
The “California”, was the first iron clipper built in the Netherlands. The Shipping Company Bienfait in Amsterdam wanted an allround and quick cargo-passanger ship. The shipbuilders of Fop Smit answered that question by building the “California”. Its dimensions: Length: 45,33m; Width:9,78m; Weight:633 tons.
The “California” made her maidenvoyage to Australia. On her maiden voyage captain F.C.Jaski sailed her in the incredibly short time in 86 days from The Downs to Port Adelaide, delivering a hundred satisfied English immigrants.
In 1878 the ship was taken out of service by Bienfait and sold to a German businessman. In 1895 it was ultimately broken down.
