The design history of the C-156, Project 613, is given by https://www.wikiwand.com/ru/%D0%9F%D0%B ... %D0%B0_613

On July 30, 1944, the German U-250 type VIIC submarine was sunk in the Gulf of Finland. The boat sunk at a depth of 27 meters was raised in October and was towed to Kronstadt. The People's Commissar of the Navy N.G. Kuznetsov issued an order in January 1945, according to which work on project 608 was stopped and the creation of project 613 began, which should be based on the design of a German boat, but with a slight increase in displacement from 770 to 800 tons. After the end of the war, Soviet specialists got acquainted with the unfinished German "electric boats" type XXI, which were captured at the shipyards, Danzig. In the spring of 1946, four completed Type XXI boats were received from Great Britain. The result of sea trials of these ships was a complete change in the technical specifications for project 613 in August 1946, and type XXI was taken as the basis for a new version of the project of the main Soviet post-war submarine. The draft design was completed in October 1947, the working drawings were ready by August 1948.

The coastal submarine "S-156" was built under yard 502 at shipyard No. 112 "Krasnoe Sormovo" named after A. Zhdanov in Gorky in 1953. Transferred through inland water systems to the Baltic Shipyard No. 189 named after S. Ordzhonikidze to Leningrad for completion and testing.25 October 1952 laid down.
