DOLFIJN Hr. Ms. (S 808) submarine

Built as a submarine under yard no 279 by the Rotterdamse Droogdock Maatschappij, Rotterdam for the Royal Netherlands Navy.
30 December 1954 laid down.
20 May 1959 launched as Hr Ms. DOLFIJN (S 808) (dolphin) the lead ship of the Dolfijn class.
Displacement 1,530 surfaced, 1,826 tons submerged, dim. 79.50 x 7.80 x 4.95m, (draught on surface.)
Powered by two 12-cyl. MAN 4-stroke engines each 1,250 hp. two Smit electric motors each 2,200 hp., twin propellers, speed 14.5 knots surface, 17.0 knots submerged.
Diving depth over 200m.
Armament: four bow and four stern tubes of 53.3cm., carried 18 US Mark 37 torpedoes.
Crew 67.
16 December 1960 commissioned at the submarine base in the Waalhaven, Rotterdam.

From 04 March 1965 till 15 February 1967 out of service for modernization.
After her modernization the following details have changed:
Engine replaced by two SEMT Pielstick PA4 diesels, each 1,550 hp.
Electro motors were replaced by two Holec electric motors.
Armament: Torpedoes were replaced by US Mark 48.

In March 1962 the DOLFIJN and ZEELEEUW were sent to the west coast of the US to show the flag.
After this DOLFIJN and ZEELEEUW, and a number of destroyers were sent to Netherlands New Guinea because of rising tension between the Netherlands and Indonesia.
When the situation calmed down, she returned to the Netherlands.

In 1963 Toulouse was visited for testing of a new type of torpedo tube.

In May 1964 DOLFIJN participated in an exercise called Long Look held between Canada and Greenland.

In January 1968 DOLFIJN, and POTVIS left the port of Den Helder for a war simulation in the northern Atlantic Ocean that would last 5 weeks.

In May 1970 an international exercise called Rusty Nut is held where the boat participated in. Later that year in September she participated in the NATO exercise Northern Wedding In early 1971 she practiced with her sister ZEEHOND in the Bay of Biscay. In September 1976 she participated in the NATO exercise Team Work.

In July 1978 DOLFIJN, together with the frigates TROMP, VAN NES, VAN GALEN, the destroyers HOLLAND, ZEELAND and the replenishment ship POOLSTER visited New York in commemoration of the city’s 200 years anniversary.

On 29 April 1982 the DOLFIJN was decommissioned.

On 22 July 1985, the boat was sold to be scrapped at the yard of the Heuvelman in Puttershoek, she was eventually scrapped in s’Gravendeel.

Mozambique 2019 116 MT sg?, Scott? Although this issue was authorized by the Mozambique postal administration, it was not sold in Mozambique, but only distributed by the Mozambique philatelic agency for distribution on the novelty market.
