“Lovely Matilda”

Post by Anatol » Sat Jan 29, 2022 6:17 pm

The whaleship "Lovely Matilda" of Philadelphia. Captain Benjin Huggins, which died while whaling off the coast off Newfoundland on September 3, 1825. The design stamp is made after painting of Antoine Roux the Elder, "The Lovely Matilda". There is little information. If anyone has any further information, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Could not find much more only that she was built in Philadelphia in 1805 as a cargo vessel for the Franco-American wine and silk trade.
231 tons.
1808 she was under command of Capt. Benjamin Higgens.
The painting after which the stamp? is designed was painted by Roux Senr. in 1808 in Marseille.
When she was fitted out as a whaler, I found that in 1818 only one ship was whaling from Philadelphia port.
Also, her fate is unknown.

Sources: many websites.

The design stamp is made after painting of Roy Cross: "The Lovely Matilda".
I apologize for the erroneous name of the artist on the stamp design in the first article.
