VASCO NUNEZ DE BALBOA

Norfolk Island issued a set of stamps in 1994 which shows us Pacific explorers and their ships, the 5c shows us the Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa and a caravel rigged ship with the name BARBARA. I can nowhere find this ship's name connected to Vasco Nunez de Balboa, he was planning an expedition in the Pacific and was building ships in Acla, but before he sailed he was arrested and decapitated.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Spanish conqueror and discoverer of the Pacific Ocean in 1513, was born in 1475 in Jerez de los Caballeros, province of Badajoz, and was a descendant of the lords of the castle of Balboa, near Villafranca in the current province of León. He grew up in a noble family from Extremadura, and little is known about his childhood, until in March 1501 he embarked as a squire on the expedition of the navigator Rodrigo de Bastidas, heading to the Indies to travel the coasts of what is now Colombia.
Once the expedition was over, his wish was to become a farmer on the island of Hispaniola (now Santo Domingo), but there he contracted significant debts, so in 1509 he took advantage of Fernández de Enciso's expedition to embark as a stowaway accompanied by his dog. Leoncico. Discovered, he was about to be abandoned on a desert island, saving himself by the knowledge he had of that region, which he had traveled eight years ago.
Thanks to his experience as an explorer, and to the authority and consideration among his peers, in 1510 he was appointed mayor of the newly founded Santa María de la Antigua, the first Spanish city on Tierra Firme, and located in the Darién region, whose riches would make it be renamed as Castilla del Oro.
However, that endemic evil that accompanied many Spanish conquerors, which was none other than the fratricidal struggle between them, led him to imprison his former protector, Fernández de Enciso, and expel another famous conqueror and explorer from the city, Diego of Nicuesa.
From that moment, Nuñez de Balboa began his conquering facet, sailing through the Isthmus of Panama, which he incorporated into the domains of the Crown. He was the first Spaniard to describe the Andes mountain range in 1512. On September 25, 1513, in a new expedition, he entered the Chucunaque River mountain ranges, and informed by the indigenous people, he managed to reach a peak from where he could contemplate excited the waters of the unknown sea, which he baptized as the South Sea, later renamed in 1520 as Pacific by Magellan.
Vasco Núñez de Balboa asked for reinforcements to continue conquering the south of the continent, a feat that would have taken him to Peru. However, he lost his position as governor in favor of Pedrarias Dávila, one of his former enemies from Hispaniola, and who relegated

Extremadura to oblivion.
Despite this, in 1514 the Spanish Crown recognized the great service of Núñez de Balboa, the king appointed him Advance of the South Sea and Governor of Panama and Coiba, and partially rehabilitated him, for which he wanted to continue the exploration of the South Sea. Thus, between 1517 and 18, he moved to Acla (Panama) with 300 men and managed to prepare the materials to build the vessels necessary for the expedition.
However, the old quarrels reappeared, and before he could launch his expedition, he was arrested by a group of men under the command of Francisco Pizarro, on behalf of Governor Pedrarias Dávila. Tried on a charge of treason, he was executed at Acla on January 15, 1519.
