Nevelskoy Gennady - Admiral and explorer

Post by Anatol » Tue Apr 19, 2022 7:39 pm

Gennady Nevelskoy (1813 - 1876) - Russian admiral (1874), explorer of the Far East, founder of the city of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur. He proved that the mouth of the Amur is accessible to ships and that Sakhalin is an island.
Born in the family of a naval officer on November 23, 1813. He graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps (1832) and officer classes (1836). He was appointed to the squadron of Admiral F. Litke as an officer on the Bellona ship. Then he served on the ships "Prince Varshavsky" ("Konstantin"), "Aurora" and "Ingermanland".
In 1847 he was appointed commander of the Baikal military transport, on which the following year he made the transition from Kronstadt across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans around Cape Horn to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Since 1849, the ship was based in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, from where she made research voyages. Оn his own initiative carried out a study and compiled a description of the northern part of the island. Sakhalin, Sakhalin Bay, mouth of the river. Amur, proved that Sakhalin is an island, and not a peninsula, established the accessibility of the Amur to sea vessels. In 1850-55 he led the Amur expedition, which carried out research in the lower reaches of the Amur, on about. Sakhalin and in the Tatar Strait. In the summer of 1850, without a prescription, he raised the Russian flag in the Nikolaevsky post he founded (now the city of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur). Nevelskoy's self-governing actions caused discontent and irritation in Russian government circles. The so-called Special Committee considered his act an audacity worthy of demotion to the sailors, which was reported to Emperor Nicholas I. However, after listening to Muravyov N.N.'s report, Nicholas I called Nevelsky's act "valiant, noble and patriotic", and even awarded him Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree, and on the report of the Special Committee he imposed the famous resolution: "Where the Russian flag is once raised, it should not be lowered there."
In 1851, Nevelskoy was again sent to the Far East. In subsequent years, Nevelskoy and his subordinates carried out a detailed study of the shores of the mouth of the Amur, the Amur Estuary and the Tatar Strait, as well as the continental parts of the Amur and Ussuri Territories and Sakhalin Island. At the same time, the captain of the 1st rank, and since August 1854 Rear Admiral Nevelskoy, on behalf of the emperor, established the power of Russia in the Far Eastern territories. In the mid-1850s, large-scale development of the Amur Territory by Russia began under the leadership of Governor Muravyov. Nevelsky's mission was exhausted and he returned to St. Petersburg. No longer participated in sea voyages. He devoted a significant part of his life to systematizing the materials he collected during the Amur expedition: he participated in the refinement of maps, advised politicians and entrepreneurs. He was a full member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.
At the same time, he was appointed a member of the Naval Scientific Council. In 1864, Nevelsky was awarded the rank of vice admiral, in 1874 - full admiral. The main goal of the last years of Nevelsky's life was to write a book about the Amur expedition. The final version of Nevelsky's book entitled "The Feats of Russian Naval Officers in the Far East of Russia 1849-1855" was prepared by his widow and was published in 1877.
Named after Nevelskoy: a strait (the narrowest part of the Tatar Strait), a bay, a mountain and a city on Sakhalin (Nevelsk), Nevelsky monuments were erected in Vladivostok, Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, Khabarovsk, Soligalich.

The URL given by Anatol on the transport BAIKAL does not open the side: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10662 works better.
