Montserrat issued in 1967 tourism stamps of which the 5c shows us two sailing yachts, which were American built sailboats of the “Sunfish“ ,and “Sailfish” class.
They were identified in some of the press released and identification was confirmed in reply to an inquiry by their builder AMF Alcort, Division of American Machine & Foundry Co,, Waterbury, Conn., in fact, the design of the Montserrat stamp is taken from a photo in their advertising brochure.
The Montserrat stamp shows a “Sunfish” in the foreground with a “Sailfish” astern.
These are one-design classes having a centerboard and a molded fiberglass hull; build-it-yourself kits of marine plywood are available. These boats were designed for fast, easy handling and safety; foam flotation, bonded to the inside of the hull, makes them unsinkable. Details of the factory-finished Fiberglas boats. “Sailfish” length overall 13.7, beam 3.5½ ft., sail area 75 sq.ft., hull weight 98 pounds. Crew capacity 600 pounds.
“Sunfish”, length overall 13.10, beam 4.8½ft. Sail area 75 sq ft., hull weight 139 pounds, crew capacity 500 pounds.
