EUROMED 2022 (MARINE ARCHAEOLOGY OF MEDITERRANEAN )

The Uluburun Shipwreck was discovered by a sponge diver in 1982 in Ka?, Uluburun. Between 1984-1994, more than 22,000 dives were made to depths exceeding 44 meters in underwater excavations that lasted for 11 seasons. The artifacts extracted from the shipwreck are exhibited in Uluburun Hall in Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum.
The remains during the excavations in the Uluburun Shipwreck belong to the late Bronze Age (CA.around 1600-1200 BC) and this makes the Uluburun Shipwreck the oldest ocean-going vessel in the world. The ship was found lying at a depth of 44 to 52 meters on a steep, rocky slope filled with sand pockets. It is estimated that the ship, which is approximately 15 meters in length and 5 meters in width, carries 20 tons of cargo. 10 tons of copper ingots made in the form of ox hides and 1 ton of tin constituted the main shipload of the ship. In addition, a large number of items such as 149 amphorae made of cooked soil of Eastern Mediterranean (Canaan Region) origin, 10 large storage containers, 24 single-hole stone anchors with a total weight of 3.3 tons, bronze tools, approximately 175 pieces of cobalt blue, turquoise and lavender colored glass ingot (the oldest known solid glass ingots), seals (the most striking is the golden scarab belonging to Queen Nefertiti of Egypt), untreated elephant and hippopotamus teeth, amber beads and figurines of Baltic origin were found. According to the shipload it carries, the ship's possible route is either from the Syrian-Palestinian coast or from Cyprus to the Aegean.
Studies have shown that the Uluburun ship was produced in Eastern Mediterranean or Cyprus. In its construction, cedar wood was used and the cladding boards were combined with the "match method". These matches are locked by dowels, and this is a first for the period in which it was made.
The shipload of the ship containing exotic and valuable gifts exchanged by kings, heads of state, or wealthy merchants has shown that the Uluburun Shipwreck carries an outstanding shipment. According to the dendrochronological (method of dating with tree rings) date of the cedar tree on which the ship was built, it is thought that the Uluburun ship sank between 1335-1305 BC.
A single value commemorative stamp and first-day cover with the theme of " EUROMED 2022 (MARINE ARCHAEOLOGY OF MEDITERRANEAN)", were prepared by PTT A? by including the visuals of the "Uluburun Shipwreck", which is the oldest ocean-going vessel known in the world and located in the territorial waters of our country, were issued on 19.07.2022.
