400th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST DOMINICAN MISSIONARIES IN THE PHILIPPINE

For the 400th anniversary of the first arrival of the Dominican missionaries in the Philippines, the Philippines Mail used three stamps of which one stamp the 1P (sg 2046) shows a Manila galleon on the right of the stamp on which the missionaries arrived in the Philippines,
The galleon of which I can‘t find the name on the internet sailed from Acapulco on 06 April 1587 with fifteen friars among other passengers via Mexico were two friars disembarked, before she sailed for Manila, where they arrived on 25 July 1587. The 13 friars were the first Dominican missionaries in the Philippines. Most catalogs give that the ship, is a shipwrecked galleon, but when you enlarge the stamp, she is under most of her sail and sailing, and not shipwrecked. Also, a church is visible as well as a statue of the Virgin.

4p75 (sg 2047) Juan Guerrero, was a retired Spanish army officer in Manila, who decided to spend the rest of his life in the welfare and education of abandoned and orphaned or poor Spanish children. In 1620, Guerrero transformed his hermitage home into an orphanage named the Colegio de Ninos Huerfanos de San Juan de Letran. He collected alms and later secured aid from King Philip IV. Having spent his life in this work, Guerrero at his death, being then a Dominican friar, placed this school in charge of the Dominicans, who accepted it on 18 June 1640, merging the college with a similar college under the charge of Diego de Santa Maria. The school later became known as the College of Saint John of Lateran.

5P50 (sg2048) Bernardo de Santa Catalina was part of the first group of Dominican missionaries who sailed in 1586 from Spain to Veracruz and reached the Philippines on 15 July 1587. The Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, in his will, had made provisions for the founding of what is now the University of Santo Tomas, it was Bernardo de Santa Catalina who executed the document of foundation stating that "the residue of his (Benavides') legacy should be applied to the founding and endowing of a college. He carried out Benavides' wishes and was able to secure a building near the Dominican church and convent in Intramuros for the College.
The stamp shows Miguel de Benavides, the Archbishop of Manila in conference with his executors Bernardo de Santa Catalina and Baltasar Fort about the foundation of a college in Manila. In the background the front of the university building.

Note Scott incorrectly indicates the stamp to depict the Pope)
