For this 1st of August, Correios invited the Embassy of Portugal to launch the commemorative stamp in honor of the Centenary of the First Air Crossing of the South Atlantic, completed in June 1922, when Independence Day celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The left stamp shows us a small wooden Portuguese vessel used in the 14th century by the first discoverers, a square sail on the foremast, and for better steering a lateen sail on the after mast.

The se-tenant is made up of 3 pieces representing the city of departure, Lisbon, and the place of arrival, Rio de Janeiro, with images of the Belém Tower and Christ the Redeemer. It is possible to notice the Fairey III-D seaplane flying over the South Atlantic and the two pilots framed by the astrolabe, a symbol of the first maritime adventures, under the “path corrector”, one of the new instruments invented by Gago Coutinho to aid the crossing.
