U-87 submarine 1941

The U-87 was built under yard No 283 by Flender Werke AG, Lubeck-Siems for the German Navy.
09 June 1938 ordered.
18 April 1940 laid down.
21 June 1941 launched as the U-87. Type VIIB.
Displacement 753 ton surface, 857 ton submerged. Dim. 66.50 x 6.20 x 4.74m (draught)
Installed power:2,800–3,200 PS (2,100–2,400 kW; 2,800–3,200 bhp) (diesels), 750 PS (550 kW; 740 shp) (electric)
Propulsion: Two diesel engines and two electric motors. Twin shafts.
Range: 9,400 nmi (17,400 km; 10,800 mi) at 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph) surfaced, 90 nmi (170 km; 100 mi) at 4 knots (7.4 km/h; 4.6 mph) submerged
Test depth: 220 m (720 ft). Crush depth: 230–250 m (750–820 ft).
Armament:
5 × 53.3 cm (21 in) torpedo tubes (four bow, one stern)
14 × torpedoes or 26 TMA mines
1 × 8.8 cm (3.46 in) deck gun (220 rounds)
1 × 2 cm (0.79 in) C/30 anti-aircraft gun.
Complement 4 officers, 40–56 enlisted
19 August 1941 completed.
After completing a unit of the 6th U-boat Flotilla based in Danzig and St Nazaire.

She made 5 patrols under command of Kptit. Joachim Berger in which she 5 merchant ships sunk.
She was sunk by depth charges of the Canadian Naval Forces on 4 March1943 in position 41 36N 13 31W by the corvette SHEDIAC and the destroyer ST CROIX who protected convoy KMS 10G.
Her complete crew of 49 men was lost.
