About Jan van Amstel:
Where does the name come from?
The ship is named after Jan van Amstel. Van Amstel was born on December 12, 1618 in Gemert, Noord Brabant.
Van Amstel is buried in Schijndel with on his gravestone the poem that Joost van den Vondel wrote about his heroic deeds at sea. Little is known about Van Amstel's youth. When he rides his father's horse lame at a young age, he leaves for Amsterdam. There he moves in with his family, the well-known mayor family Bicker.
He only appears in historiography again in 1654, when he goes on a mission to Russia as a commander. Van Amstel distinguished himself in the Republic's fight for free trade at sea. This was especially evident in the so-called Northern War (1655-1660). In it, Amsterdam fought against Charles X Gustavus of Sweden. This Karel endangered the trade of Amsterdam by his conquest plans in the Baltic Sea.
During the voyage against the Swedes in November 1659 under De Ruyter, Jan van Amstel was commander of the ship De ZEVEN PROVINCIÉN. On this journey, he conquered the strong fortress town of Nyborg.
The issuing of the Act of Navigation by England (1651) worsened the Republic's relationship with England. Van Amstel was particularly active in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667). Van Amstel was then commander of the 60-gun ship DE VRIJHEID (Freedom). He took part in the Four Days' Battle (1666), in which his ship was badly damaged. In 1667 he was commander of the ship TIJDVERDRIJF (Pastime) with 64 guns, taking part in the famous Voyage to Chatham.
On April 18, 1668, he was still living in Amsterdam, on the Rouaanse Kade. This is evidenced by the will he made on that day. He is then ready to carry out a mission with his warship for his principals. He was probably injured during this assignment and then transferred to Schijndel. There Jan van Amstel dies on September 29, 1669.
