The oldest river ship in Peru is the CLAVERO, built-in 1876 in France.
Originally named the CAHUAPANAS, she was purchased by the Peruvian Navy in 1892 to use in the defense of Peru’s Amazon frontiers and was involved in a battle with Ecuadorean naval forces on the Napo River in 1903, from which she emerged victorious. She was then part of an expedition to the Purus River in 1905.
In 1911, the ship was used to deliver mail on the Mara-ñon and Ucayali rivers; and in 1933, the ship was sold to the Morey Shipping Company and used to carry cargo.
She was renamed the CLAVERO after First Lieutenant Manuel Clavero, a Peruvian naval hero who made his name commanding another steamboat, the AMERICA, during the successful Battle of La Pedrera versus Colombia in 1911.
Now, only boats belonging to the Peruvian Navy can use names of naval heroes, but the renaming of the CLAVERO pre-dates this rule.
She was restored in 2009 and is now a wonderful combination of historic atmosphere and comfortable facilities, which form a living part of the Museum of Historic Boats.
All her six cabins have river-view windows and are fitted with air-conditioning, a chair, a wardrobe, and private bathrooms with warm showers.
The public areas include a dining hall used for meals, lectures, and films, and also houses a bar and library, and an observation deck.
Beginning and ending in Iquitos, the bustling heart of the Peruvian Amazon, she now sails on five-day river cruises with a unique Amazon experience that combines relaxed travel on historic boats, wildlife and wilderness experience in rain forests and rivers, and indigenous Amazon village visits where local cultures live intertwined with the rainforest.
Boarding the CLAVERO in the town of Nauta, situated near the confluence of the Amazon River, the focus of the exploration is two full days around the Samiria River in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a great place to experience the scenery, waterways, forest wildlife, and people in the company of professional naturalist guides.
