ATALANTA Aland jakter

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed May 10, 2023 9:33 pm

Shipbuilding
The stamp highlights the Åland shipbuilding tradition and depicts the sailing yacht ALANTA, a reconstruction of an Åland yacht from the early 1800s. At 14 metres long and 4 metres wide, the ship has been built in the traditional way in pine using the clinker method. The clinker boat tradition is unique to the Nordic region, with roots that date back over 2,000 years. In December 2021, the tradition of building and sailing clinker boats was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The sailing yacht ALANTA was launched in 2021. Since summer 2022, the ship has been seaworthy.

Background
Sail yacht Alanta is an association founded out of the dream of recreating a yacht from the Åland archipelago. Originally, the goal was to find an interesting model, and recreate it as far as practically possible. However, the investigations yielded no results; the once common type of boat has barely been documented. The only examples that exist are the cases when “jakters” were offered to the state, and due to some kind of "tendering procedure" measured and drawn up. Some such drawings and protocols can be found in the Postal Museum, the Customs Museum and the National Archives.
Thanks to those difficulties, the project's focus changed. The association will now carry out significantly more research than was originally intended, in order to be able to recreate the Åland “jakter” (hunt) in every possible way and account for its development up to the known form that the jakters assumed at the end of the 19th century.
In principle, it can be assumed that the yachts developed from the big boats, which slowly became cabin boats that were re-rigged and must have become more seaworthy to undertake the trips to Reval and Riga that are documented in writing. You can read more about the history (as the research progresses) on the " Åland Jakters" page .

The jakter will be about 14 meters long and 4.5 meters wide. It is fully decked and has accommodation for about 10 people. The construction takes place in the traditional Åland way entirely in pine, and on tiles without templates. The construction techniques have been documented in pictures, film and text.

Since the winter of 2021, this construction method has also been classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, read more here !
You can always visit the shipyard ( Sjökvarteret in Mariehamn) to see what is going on. Alanta was launched on July 24, 2021, and should be ready for sailing in the 2022 season. But we still need some support to make it happen!

There are several ways to support the association, read more on the " Support us " page.
