ASTRÉE French Navy vessel alongside in Papeete.

French Polynesia used a set of stamps which shows Pateete on old photographs, the 85F stamp shows the French Navy vessel ASTRÉE at Papeete, when she was station vessel in the Pacific.

Built as a wooden hulled frigate at Lorient for the French Navy.
26 July 1845 laid down.
24 December 1895 launched as the ASTRÉE. One of eight sail frigates on the slipways for which engines were ordered in June 58.
She was lengthened by about 24m on the slipway and converted on plans by Louis Sollier. Installation of her machinery was completed in December 1860
Displacement 3,564 ton, dim, 76.58, 77.58 wl, x 14.40 x 6.36m.
Machinery: 600nhp (FCM). 2 cylinders, trials 1411ihp = 11.21kts. Coal 464ton.
Armament (1865) UD 24 x 16cm guns; SD 4 x 16cm guns.
Crew 415.
09 March 1860 commissioned.

1861 Trials at Lorient.
19 July till 10 November 1862 decommissioned.

10 February 1863 till 11 August 1866 stationed on the Brazil and La Plate station.
11 July 1868 till 08 July 1871 stationed on the Pacific station.
03 May 1877 Stricken.

Disposal. ASTRÉE became a barrack and storage hulk at Lorient, was renamed PONTON NO 2 in 1913, to free the name for a new submarine.
Broken up in 1922.
