JEKT is a name in use in Norway along the western coast for a wide beam coastal sail-ship with an open deck, later also with a fixed deck and only one mast, stepped roughly in the amidships which can carry a square sail, some did have a topsail.

The building was completely based on the boatyards experience, not any model or drawing was used.
The JEKT was used from the 14th century into nearly the 20th century, and she carried local produce along the western Norway coast.

Clinker or carvel constructed, rounded bilges, straight keel, did have sometimes a cabin on the stern.
Outboard rudder, with a tiller.

The tonnage was counted on the numbers of barrels she could carry.
In the later JEKT’s an auxiliary engine was fitted, but in the early times oars were used.
Reported length from 10 to 22 meters e.g. length 18m beam 6.4m depth 3.7m.
Average crew 5 men.
A tonnage below 400 ton was a småljekt, between 400 and 800 ton was a myllåjekt, larger than 800 ton a storjekt.

Norway 1983 3k sg 923.
