Built as a cruise vessel under yard No. A 29 by the yard of Chantiers de L’Atlantique, Saint Nazaire for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Miami.

04 April 1987 launched under the name SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS.
Tonnage 73.192 gross, 45.003 net, 7.283 dwt., dim. 268.25 x 32.21 x 7.6m (draught), length bpp. 236.02m.
Powered by four 9-cyl. Alsthom/Pielstick diesel engines, total 27.800 bhp, speed 21 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 2.282 passengers, maximum 2.690 passengers. Crew 750.
12 Passengers decks. 1.141 passenger cabins.
September 1987 she made her first trial voyage.
01 December 1987 delivered to owners. Under the flag of Liberia.
Passenger amenities include two cinemas seating 146 persons each, health club, sauna, massage room, disco, main entertainment center seat 1.050 persons, daytime lounge to become entertainment and dance lounge at night, youth center, Viking Crown lounge located 141 feet above sea level, musical lounge, casino, two restaurants, champagne bar, a Centrum spread over five decks with boutiques and windjammer café.
At that time she was the largest cruise liner in the world.
22 December 1987 at high tide she sailed from St Nazaire for Miami.
04 January 1988 arrived there, and after making some short introduction cruises, she was christened by Rosalyn Carter, the wife of the former President Carter on 15 January 1988.
16 January under command of Capt. Tor Stangeland and fully booked she sailed for her first 7 day cruise to Labadee, Haiti, Puerto Rico and St Thomas.
