SUGAR REFINER

Built under yard No. 866 by Hall Russell at Aberdeen for the Silvertown Services Shipping Ltd. (Sugar Line), U.K.
Launched under the name SUGAR REFINER, one sister the SUGAR TRANSPORTER.
Tonnage 5.104 gross, 2.562 net, 6.551 dwt. Dim. 120.7 x 16.3 x 8.54m., length between pp. 112.8m.
One 6 cyl. Werkspoor-Sulzer engine, 3.000 bhp, speed 13 knots.
1958 Delivered to owners.

Sugar was carried in four holds with large hatches. She carried derricks for loading unloading, but mostly the sugar was loaded/discharged by grab and belt conveyor.
She and her sister were used in the transport of sugar from the West Indies to the U.K.

Prominent in the bulk trades, the ships of the Sugar Line have been familiar for a good many years in the Thames, the Mersey and the Clyde.
Designed primarily for the carriage of raw sugar in bulk, they have also been employed as ore or grain carrier as the need arouse, and their blue and silver striped funnels have been seen in many parts of the world.
The company was established in the 1950s as a subsidiary of Tate and Lyle Ltd. for the purpose of supplying their refineries with raw material, but the company came to an end in the 1970s

1963 Transferred to the Sugar Line.
1967 Sold to Etela-Suomen Laiva O/Y, Finland and renamed ARKADIA.
1972 Sold to Lagadia Maritime Ltd., Cyprus, renamed IRENES FAITH.
1974 Sold to Westhampton Navigation Corp., Greece, renamed ELARKADIA.
1978 Sold to Lenaka Shipping Co. Ltd., Cyprus, renamed NAVISAILOR, the same year renamed by owners in SAILOR II.
1979 Sold to Cia. Pinares de Navigation S.A. Panama, renamed MOLLY.
1979 Sold to Irenkamar S.A., Panama, not renamed.
03 April 1986 arrived at Brodospas, Split, Yugoslavia for scrapping.

Till so far the other ships on the strip are not identified.
