Tongkong

Post by shipstamps » Thu Jan 01, 2009 2:59 pm

10 cents value is a timber tongkong. This is a most interesting boat evolved locally and built only in Singapore and in parts of Johore. Originally without the long bowsprit and schooner rig the craft was employed by the Southern Indian lightermen at Singapore and at Penang. Later they passed into Malay hands and were adopted for use solely for bringing in baulks of timber from Johore and the Rhio Archipelago. I'm told the tongkongs (or tonckangs) are modern versions of the Chinese junk, plying between Singapore and Sumatra with cut tree trunks. They are rather big craft of 300 to 400 tons, and at night often a menace, mostly carrying only a dim white light which is often obscured.
