South Georgia did issue on 06 Feb. 2004 a series of 16 stamps of 40p, which has been split into four sets of four. Each set has a background skyline of the island as seen from different locations.
Four stamps depict a ship, the HMS SAPPHO (details as given below), DISCOVERY built in 1901, HMS PLYMOUTH F126 http://members.fortunecity.com/warship/plym.html and the fish research vessel QUEST.

Built as a 2nd class cruiser by Samuda Bros., Poplar, U.K. for the Royal Navy.
1890 Laid down.
09 May 1891 launched under the name HMS SAPPHO, she was one of the Apollo class.
Displacement 3.400 tons, dim. 300 x 43 x 18ft.
Powered by triple expansion steam engines, 7.000 hp, speed 18 knots, twin screws, maximum 9.000 hp., speed 20 knots. Bunker capacity maximum 535 tons.
Armament 2 – 6 inch QF, 6 – 4.7 inch, 8 – 6 pdrs. QF, 1 – 3pdr, 4 – 14 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 273.
08 May 1893 completed.

26 June 1879 present at the Naval Review at Spithead in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee.
25 January 1906 she sailed from Montevideo under command of Capt. Michael Henry Hodges, bound for South Georgia.
31 January during bad weather South Georgia was sighted, but the weather was to bad to enter Grytviken, and for the night the SAPPHO had to stand off from the coast.
01 February around noon again land was sighted, but due to bad visibility the ship could not enter Cumberland Bay before 08.00 p.m. and later that evening the anchor was dropt.

The next morning Capt Hodges ordered to commence survey work in the bay, renaming Grytviken King Edward Cove.
Capt Larsen of the whale station visited the SAPPHO, and he invited Capt. Hodges to come ashore and visit the whale station, what Capt. Hodges accepted.
06 February the HMS SAPPHIO left from Grytviken bound for Montevideo.

1910 Converted in a minelayer. 02 April 1912 recommissioned in Portsmouth.
1914 Used as tender.
1915 Reserve.
In April 1918 was it the intention to use her as a blockship for the Oostende (Ostend) Belgium raid, but she broke down and was not used.
18 March 1921 sold for scrap to Castle, Plymouth.
