MICALVI

Post by shipstamps » Mon Dec 22, 2008 4:24 pm

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No 8 by Ostseewerft, Stettin for E.R. Retzlaff, Germany.
Tonnage 612 gross, displacement 850 tons, dim. 55.32 (bpp) x 8.76 x 3.35m. draught.
Launched under the name BRAGI, (not BRAGUI as given on the web-side.)
One triple expansion steam engine 380 hp., speed 9.5 knots.
September 1925 completed.

Used as a garbage ship on the River Rheine is given by the Chilean web-site but that looks a little strange to my, she looks more like a sea going ship, with the high superstructure, but it can be possible that after she was refitted in a supply ship this superstructure is added. I have made many voyages on the River Rheine and with this high superstructure she never could pass under the many bridges which cross the river.
Anyhow the square bridge front looks the same as showed on the ship depict on the stamp, and I believe she is the same ship as given on the photo on the web-site given below.

1926 Sold to O.A. Müller, Hamburg, and renamed BOSTONLINCS. (Not BOSTON LINES as given on the web-site.)
1928 Sold to the navy of Chile and renamed MICALVI. She was named in honour of Contramaestre (boson) Micalvi who was in service of the Chilean Navy between 03 November 1877 and 13 September 1880. He participated in the navy battle of Iquique on board the corvette ESMERALDA against the Peruvian monitor HUASCAR during the Pacific War.

She sailed from Europe with a cargo of ammunition for the battleship ALMIRANTE LATORRE, after arrival she would be broken up.
After arrival in Chile, however she was refitted in a supply vessel for the Punta Arenas areas, where it lent valuable services to the colonists of the uninhabited areas, especial Tortel and Navarino and she contributed to make sovereignty in these Chilean territories legitimate.

31 May 1961 decommissioned, and in use as a pontoon, after 33 years of active service in the Chilean Navy.
24 August 1961 dedicated to Puerto Williams and declared historical ship, and museum.
2007 Still at Puerto Williams and used as clubhouse and restaurant in the local yacht harbour.

Chile 1979 3p50 sg 838
