SHAKESPEARE

Post by shipstamps » Sun Dec 21, 2008 4:39 pm

Built as an iron four-masted ship by the yard of Short Bros, Sunderland for W. Adamson, London.
May 1876 launched under the name SHAKESPEARE.
Tonnage 1.814 gross, 1.757 net, dim. 84.73 x 12.24 x 7.13m.
Ship rigged.

Under Command of Captain McGregor.
1880 Sold to Edward Bates & Sons, Liverpool, under command of Capt Kearon.
Bates did do a lot of trading with India, so most possible the SHAKESPEARE was also used in this trade.
1881 Sold to W.H.Ross & Co. Liverpool.

20 November 1882 she grounded off Pig Head off Inaccessible Island and was lost.
The Annals of Tristan da Cunha (on line) gives:
Some of the crew of the SHAKESPEARE settled for a while on Tristan, but not any details on the wrecking.
