Reina del Pacifico

Post by shipstamps » Thu Dec 18, 2008 6:05 pm

A well-known British liner, the P.S.N.C.'s Reina del Pacifico is seen in the centre berth at Callao docks in the aerial photograph reproduced on the 15 centavos stamp of Peru issued in 1936 for the centenary of the Province of Callao. Built in 1931 by Harland and Wolff, Ltd., at Belfast, she has a gross tonnage of 17,707, and a length of 574ft. Her quadruple screws, driven by engines of 22,000 i.h.p., give her a speed of 19 knots. She carried 888 passengers in three classes and served on the Liverpool-West coast of South America. During the war she visited the Far East, North Atlantic, Norway, African West Coast, Suez Canal, and Mediterranean ports. She was bombed on many occasions, but escaped serious damage. Released from Govt control 1946 and returned to builders for overhaul and refit. Explosion in engine room in 1947 during trials which killed 28. Returned to Liverpool-Valparaiso service 1948. Broken up 1958 at Newport, Mon.
