Post by shipstamps » Mon Dec 08, 2008 7:11 pm

The stamp is designed after a painting of the EMANUEL by the painter Ruben Chapell, and now in the Sofartssamlingern (seamen collection) at Svendborg, Denmark. The First Day cover depict the painting.

Built as a wooden three-mast topsail schooner by A.P. Petersen, Thurö, Denmark for Rederi A/S Edel Svendborg, Denmark. (I am not sure if she is built for this company, Lloyds 1933/34 give this owner.)
Launched under the name CRITERION.
Tonnage 245 gross, 182 net, 221 dwt., dim. 35.72 x 8.16 x 3.71m. (Lloyds 1933/34)
1913 Completed.

1918 fitted out with one 2-cyl. oil engine, 71 nhp.
Later renamed JOHDAL, EVY, EMANUEL, ASTA and BORGIN under diverse owners.
1934 She appears under the name ASTA in Lloyds Register, owned by Rederi A/S Asta, Svendborg, managed by A.E. Sörensen.

27 August 1954 she sank with a full cargo of salted cod, under the name BORGIN after she got on fire in the engine room, and sank on even keel in Itivoleg Bay, West coast Greenland.
Her wreck is remarkably good preserved and lies in a depth of 26 meter of water.
