Pirogue

Post by shipstamps » Fri Dec 05, 2008 5:40 pm

A pirogue is shown on the 75 cent value, is the typical work-boat of the islands. It is a direct descendant of the canoe, as its name suggests, although it is now carvel-built and propelled by either oars or an outboard motor. Pirogues are built in various sizes from small fishing boats up to loading boats capable of taking up to 20 tons of copra and rowed by 10 men. They are invariably painted with black pitch.
