La PIQUE

Post by shipstamps » Tue Dec 02, 2008 3:23 pm

She was built in 1785 at Rochefort, France for the French Navy as a 5th rate.
Launched under the name LA FLEUR DE LIS.
Tonnage 906 ton (bm)
Armament 38 guns.

1795 Renamed LA PIQUE.
After HMS Blanche took her, she was taken in the Royal Navy as the HMS LA PIQUE.
Capt David Milne took command over her.
In the spring of 1796 he assisted in the capture of Demerara, Essiquibo and Berbice from the Dutch by the forces under Commodore Parr and Major General White.
About that time he captured the French brig LACEDEMONIAN.
On 29 June 1798 HMS LA PIQUE was cruising off the French coast with HMS JASON and MERMAID. They gave chase to a French frigate, LA SEINE (38 guns) and captured her after a running fight of about five hours.
Out of 610 men (including soldiers) on board the Frenchmen, 170 were killed and 100 wounded. HMS LA PIQUE and HMS JASON lost 8 men killed and 18 wounded, the former bearing the brunt of the action. HMS MERMAID could not get up in time. All the contestants took the ground near Pointe de la Trenche and the HMS LA PIQUE was bilged so it was necessary to destroy her.
Captain Milne, his officers and crew were removed into the prize, to the command of which the British Admiralty afterwards appointed him.
