SAMBUK, the most common of Arab dhows. The stem is low and curved, the stern high and built-up, square, often decorated but without the stern windows to be found in the baghla. There are no carved embellishments, decorations are painted, usually only once, as it is too expensive. They vary in size from 20 to 50 tons, sit low in the water, have no keel, and can be run ashore and safely beached in stormy weather.
