Potemkin

Russia issued a stamp in 1930 commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1905 Red revolt in the battleship Potemkin. The vessel was named after Prince Potemkin, a favourite of the Empress Catherine II Later the ship was renamed Panteleimon. The mutiny occurred in the vessel on June 13-14. 1905. at Odessa. Crews of other warships in the port refused to fire on the mutineers, who flew the Red Flag. Eventually the mutiny was quelled, seven of the leaders being hanged, while several others of the crew were sentenced to hard labour. The Potemkin, built at Nicolaleft, was launched in 1900 and completed in 1902. Her displacement was 12,582 tons, length 3721/2ft., beam 723/4ft.. draught 27ft., main armament four Qin. and 16 6in. guns, speed I7 knots and complement 636.
