On April 6. 1935, the Emperor of Manchukuo visited Tokio in the Japanese battle-cruiser Hiyei and the event was commemorated by Japanese stamps showing the cruiser. She was built by Kawasaki at Kobe, and was launched in 1912, not being completed until 1915. The ship was sunk off Savo Island, in the Solomons, as a result of damage by bombs and torpedoes of the U.S. Navy and Air Force during operations at Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. She was 27,500 tons, had a length of 704ft., a beam of 92ft., a draught of 27.5ft., an i.h.p. of 64,000. a speed of 27 knots, a complement of 1,100 and a main armament of eight 14in. and 16 6in. guns.
