Goshuinbune

Post by shipstamps » Fri Nov 28, 2008 1:58 pm

This 15c. stamp shows a Japanese merchant trading junk, from the Japanese artist Grabado Nagasaki. The junk, of the type known as a "goshuinbune" was about 188 ft. in length, with a beam of 50 ft. and was able to carry up to 400 persons. They were built for trading abroad and were owned by merchants of Kyoto, Sakai, and Nagasaki, who received official charters for this purpose, the charters dating from the year 1604. The seal used on these official charters was actually a representation of a goshuinbune.
