COLUMBIA

Post by shipstamps » Mon Nov 24, 2008 3:51 pm

She was built as a wooden ship by Webb & Allen, New York for C.H. Marshall, New York (Black Ball Line.)
The line was founded by a group of Quaker merchants in 1817.
Launched under the name COLUMBIA.
Tonnage 1.099 gross, dim. 169 x 37 x 21ft.
Ship rigged.
1846 Completed.

She was the first American sailing ship fitted out with iron knees and straps.

Built for the packet service between New York and Liverpool, out mostly with cargo return with emigrants from Ireland and the U.K.
The ships of the Black Ball Line, made the passage to Liverpool average in 23 days, and the return voyage in 40 days.
Till 1869 is given that she is owned by C.H.Marshall, thereafter owned by C.Howes and Co. New York.
Till 1874 in the register, under command of Capt. H. Robinson and owned still by C. Howes and Co.

W.P. Vol. 40 page 4 gives that James Baines at Liverpool is the owner, but his Black Ball Line was founded in 1851, and for so far I can find he never have had a ship with the name COLUMBIA.
