Curacao

Mrs. J. Dalenoord, of The Hague, designed the 10 + 8c. stamp, which carries a representation of the trawl-lugger Curacao (registry YM99), owned by the N.V. Visserijmaatschappij Medan-Batavia of Ymulden. This trawler, built by N.Y. Scheepsbouwwerf "De Dageraad" at Woubrugge, near Govida, was launched on May 12, 1956, and handed over to her owners on July 1 of that year. Her gross tonnage is 262.53 and she is driven by a reversible "Industry" oil engine of 600 s.h.p. The vessel's trawl winch is coupled to an electric motor, which is in turn harnessed to a steam generator powered from a Deutz diesel of 155 h.p. An auxiliary Lister oil engine of 30 h.p. is used for the compressor, pumps and generators. Central heating for the trawler is provided by oil fuel, and she is fitted with all the latest navigational aids. It is interesting to know that another trawler of these owners, from the same builders as the Curacao, appears on the 15f. stamps of St. Pierre and Miquelon. Now renamed Galantry, she was originally the Job Gouda, for her first owners the Medan-Batavia company. The Curacao has a normal crew of 13, including the skipper. Her speed is 10 knots and the fish hold measures 280 cu. metres, having a capacity of 125 tons for fish and 25 tons for ice. This will give her room for a catch of about 1,000,000 herrings.

Built as a side trawler under yard No. 485 by the yard “De Dageraad” at Woubrugge, Netherlands for the fishing company Medan-Batavia at IJmuiden, Netherlands.
12 May 1956 launched under the name CURAÇAO, fishing number IJM 99.
Tonnage, 262 gross, 131 net, dim. 40 x 7 x 3.8m. (draught)
Powered by an 8 cyl. diesel, 600 hp., speed 10 knots.
20 July 1956 delivered to owners.

Used for the herring fishery in the North Sea.
13 May 1957 onboard this vessel alongside the Trawlerkade at IJmuiden and attended by invited guests, the first stamps of this maritime set were sold by the Director-General of the Dutch PTT Mr. J.D.H. van der Toom. Jenny Janzen Dalenoord designed the 10c stamp.

The owner of the CURAÇAO, Mr. D.Gouda was very honored that his ship was chosen for the design of the 10c stamp, and he did give a few details on the ship.
She could carry around 1 million herrings, and her average earning was around 2.000 Dutch guilders a day.
When the St Pierre fish plant modernized its fleet they bought good modern second-hand trawlers in Holland.

1959 Sold to Soc. De Peche. et Congélation at St Pierre & Miquelon, and renamed SAVOYARD II SPM203. She was bought after the SAVOYARD (I) stranded on Rocher Petit on 13 May 1959 and was lost.

These two trawlers were built together with four sisters on two shipyards in the Netherlands for Job Gouda in IJmuiden.

A Dutch website gives that the SAVOYARD (II) sank in 1973, where en when not given, can't find anything on her loss on the internet. Shipwreck at St Pierre is not updated after 1970.
