RAINBOW 1845

Built as a wooden clipper ship, one of the first American clipper ships by Smith & Dimon, New York for Howland & Aspinwall, New York.
22 January 1845 launched as the RAINBOW.
Tonnage 757 tons old measurement, dim. 159 x 31.10 x 18.4ft.
Ship rigged.

She was special built for the trade between New York and China, designed by the American naval architect J.W. Griffits.
01 February 1845 sailed from New York on her maiden voyage under command of Capt. John Land, after 102 days she arrived at Hong Kong on 14 May.
01 June 1845 sailed from Whampoa for New York, most probably loaded with tea, and arrived New York 17 September after a passage of 108 days.
On her next voyage she sailed on 1 October for Hong Kong and she arrived there on 8 January 1846 after a voyage of 84 days.
Thereafter she made one other round voyage to China.
On arrival at New York Captain Land was relieved by Captain Hayes, and under the command of the new captain the RAINBOW sailed out on 17 March 1848 from New York bound for Valparaiso and China, unfortunately she went missing with all hands on this voyage, and noting was heard again of the RAINBOW.
